The Research Question

How did the 2008 housing crisis spread geographically? This story maps county-level data on building permits, home prices, lending patterns, and foreclosures to show the spatial and temporal progression of the crisis. The goal: make visible the gap between local housing markets and the national narrative.

  • FHFA House Price Index: county-level quarterly data

  • CoreLogic / Zillow: foreclosure rates by county

Methodology

All data verified against FCIC primary records and Mian & Sufi academic research. County-level aggregation follows Census Bureau geographic boundaries. Price indices from FHFA, cross-referenced with Case-Shiller where available. Lending data from HMDA public releases.
